Chinese Broccoli or Kai Lan

Pak Kanaa (ผักคะน้า)

Chinese Broccoli

Chinese broccoli is one of many asian leafy cabbage varieties, which makes it related to the broccoli we know, as well as Pak Choi and Choi Sam. In China, it’s called “Kai Lan” (芥藍). In English, you can also find the spellings “Gai Lan” or “Jie Lan” as well as the names “Chinese broccoli” or “Chinese kale”. In Thai, the vegetable is called “Pak Kanaa” ( ผักคะน้า ) or simply “Kanaa” ( คะน้า ).

Usage

Bimi as a Substitute

A pretty good substitute for Chinese broccoli is tenderstem broccoli, also known as “Bimi”, “Broccolini” or “baby broccoli”. This is not surprising, as it’s a cross between European broccoli and Chinese broccoli.
