Chinese Broccoli

Chinese broccoli is one of many asian leafy cabbage varieties, which makes it related to the broccoli we know, as well as Pak Choi and Choi Sam. In China, it’s called “Kai Lan” (芥藍). In English, you can also find the spellings “Gai Lan” or “Jie Lan” as well as the names “Chinese broccoli” or “Chinese kale”. In Thai, the vegetable is called “Pak Kanaa” ( ) or simply “Kanaa” ( ).

Broccolini as a Substitute

A pretty good replacement for Chinese broccoli is Broccolini, also known as “Bimi” or “baby broccoli”. In the UK it is commonly sold under the name “tenderstem broccoli”. It is not surprising that it works as a substitute, as it is a cross between European broccoli and Chinese broccoli.
