Jujube (Chinese Date)

The Chinese jujube is a tree of the buckthorn family that originally comes from northern and northeastern China, but is cultivated worldwide today. In China it is called . It also goes by the names “Chinese date”, “Kumul date”, “red date”, “red breast berry” or “Azufaifa”.

The red stone fruits were already described as a medicine in China in the second century of our era. They are said to help with colds and respiratory complaints. That is where the name “red breast berry” comes from.

You will find the dried berries as in almost every Asian supermarket. You can brew them as a tea or simmer them in a hearty chicken soup.
