Red Curry Paste

Seasoning Base for Gaeng Phed

Red curry paste is a Thai curry paste used to prepare the red Thai curry “Gaeng Phed” ( ). In Thai, it is called “Krueang Gaeng Phed” ( ), “Prik Gaeng Phed” ( ), or more rarely “Nam Prik Gaeng Phed” ( ).

Red curry is sometimes also called “Gaeng Daeng” ( ), which literally means “red curry”. Accordingly, you will also find the name “Prik Gaeng Daeng” ( ) for the paste. This is the case, for example, with the Cock Brand product.

You can find Thai red curry pastes in every Asian supermarket here, but also in many regular supermarkets. I can also recommend the red curry paste from Yak Thai.

With a little work and a large mortar, you can also make red curry paste yourself.

Usage

Red curry paste, in my opinion and experience, is the most versatile Thai curry paste. It works not only for curries with all kinds of meat or fish, but also as a base for various wok dishes.
